Position Summary

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Leaders work with one course throughout the semester, attend lectures, and plan and conduct four interactive, group study sessions for that course each week.

PAL Leaders are academic leaders on campus who support the following Course Support objectives on behalf of the UCAE:

  1. Provide undergraduate students at Charlotte access to free, high-quality, peer-to-peer course-specific support.
  2. Foster a welcoming environment for students to learn using a strength-focused approach.
  3. Promote a collaborative relationship among course support leaders and students that encourages a challenging, yet supportive learning environment, leading to greater educational equity on campus.

Expectations:

Commit to working 10 hours per week including:

  • 30%: Attending class meetings of the course they are selected to support.
  • 40%: Conducting four PAL sessions of one hour each per week.
  • 20%: Creating planning sheets for each PAL session conducted throughout the week.
  • 10%: Attending regular staff/mentor meetings

Keep accurate records, including:

  • Submitting planning sheets weekly for each session held
  • Submitting timesheets through Web Time Entry by the specified deadline.

Participate in Reading Day Review Sessions.

Abide by the ethical standards for the course support profession, including maintaining the confidentiality of all students and abiding by the University’s Academic Integrity Policy

Be punctual for appointments and sessions.

Check Charlotte email daily.

Qualifications

Required

Enrolled Undergraduate Students: Qualified candidates must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at UNC Charlotte.

Attend Course Support Leader Orientation: Qualified candidates must be available to attend orientation on August 13th and 14th.

Course Grades: Qualified candidates must have made an “A” in the course they are are applying for.

Preferred

GPA: Preference may be given to qualified candidates with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Communication Skills: Preference may be given to qualified candidates who demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills.

Required Supplemental Material

Qualified candidates must have at least two recommendations.

  • At least one recommendation must be from a faculty member of the subject area you are applying to support.
    • For candidates supporting multiple subject areas, additional recommendations may be requested in the future.
  • The other required recommendation can come from a professional reference or another faculty member.
  • The link to the recommendation form and a suggested email template candidates can use to request recommendations will be provided at the end of the application (linked below).

    • The linked application will collect information about candidates’ academic record at UNC Charlotte. We recommend you have a copy of your Unofficial Transcript available to complete this section. To find a copy of your Unofficial Transcript:
      • Go to my.charlotte.edu
      • Select Student Self Service from the “Student Quick Links” menu on the right
      • Select Student Records
      • Select Student Profile
      • Click Unofficial Transcript from the left hand menu
      • Choose “Undergraduate” and “Web Transcript” from the drop down menus
    • This application will close at 11:59pm on March 15th. Candidates who apply after this deadline may not be considered.
