Abstract:
This presentation explores the successful implementation of strategic communication both between peer leaders and between peer leaders and their student clients. In the fall of 2023 our Peer-Assisted Learning program began implementing a coaching and professional learning community (PLC) approach which focused on fostering collaboration among peer leaders in lieu of an instructional approach to training. We focused on PLC strategies, such as goal-setting for study sessions and student outcomes, development and application of specific strategies, and ongoing assessment of effectiveness. On the level of communication between peer leaders and student clients, we encouraged leaders to post regular announcements about study session content and exam reviews. This two-pronged approach of strategic communication was aimed to enhance the sense of belonging and self-efficacy of the leaders, as well as attendance rates among student clients in study group sessions.
This session outlines the methodologies of this two-pronged approach, emphasizing the incorporation of professional learning community strategies, as well as the impact of weekly Canvas announcements on student client relations.
Addressing challenges such as peer leader buy-in for collaborative learning, barriers to idea sharing, and consistency in communication styles, the presentation highlights the importance of overcoming these hurdles for sustained success.
This presentation offers valuable insights for professionals seeking to optimize peer leader training, providing actionable strategies to enhance communication, engagement, and overall effectiveness in course support initiatives.
