This presentation showcases the transition from an instructional model of Peer-Assisted Learning leader training to a professional learning community (PLC) approach. Specific attention is given the conditions that made the transition feasible, the conceptual framework of the approach, specifically theories of community and belonging, and the challenges and benefits that resulted from the transition.

Learning outcomes:

  • The audience will gain an understanding of the conceptual framework associated with the Professional Learning Community approach,
  • The audience will also also get insights into the real implications, benefits, and challenges associated with the implementation of the approach.
  • In addition, the audience will be able to reflect on the approach that is presented and exchange ideas about training initiatives at their own institutions.

Method of presentation

The presentation will begin with a slide show that provides an overview of the approach and its implementation in the presenter’s Learning Center. This presentation will be followed by small discussion groups focusing on the material presented and on an exchange of ideas about training in general. Results from small group discussions will be shared during the conclusion of the session.
