Midterm Grades
What is a midterm grade?
At the midpoint of each semester, faculty members are asked to report midterm grades for undergraduate students who are currently earning a D or an F in their course. Midterm grades are not submitted for every course, so the lack of a grade does not necessarily mean all is well. However, midterm grades can be a helpful barometer to determine how your semester is going thus far. Midterm grades are not final, you still have time to make some changes.
What’s next?
Regardless of whether you receive an unsatisfactory midterm grade in a class or not, now is the perfect time to ask yourself how it is going in each of your classes. The University and the Internet have several tools to help you answer that question. If all your assignments are listed in Canvas, you can enter anticipated grades into upcoming assignments to see what your final grade would be under different scenarios. There are also several grade calculators available online.
With your predicted grades in hand, you can answer the question, “If the semester were to end today, what would my GPA be?” Niner Central has a helpful GPA calculator. Knowing your semester and cumulative GPAs allow you to determine what your academic standing would be at the end of the semester.
If you are not satisfied with your current grades, GPA, or academic standing, it’s time to make some changes.
The University Center for Academic Excellence is the largest academic support office at UNC Charlotte. We provide direct course support in the form of individual, group, and drop-in tutoring for over 100 courses. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), or peer-led supplemental study group sessions, is also available for some courses. If you need to consider some more holistic changes, like adjusting your time management practices, trying new study strategies, or working on your test-taking skills, we’ve got you covered there too. We offer academic skill workshops on a variety of topics. We also have one-on-one instructional and accountability support through one-time Academic Consultations, recurring Peer Coaching, or Accountability Groups.
What if I decide to withdraw from a course?
If you decide you do not want to stick it out in a course, you do have the option to withdraw. Be sure you check the Registrar’s Calendar for applicable deadlines. You’ll also want to consider all the implications of withdrawing before you make a final decision.
