Gold Mind: The Niner Guide to Harnessing AI for Student Success

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how students study, research, and engage with course material. When used thoughtfully, AI can be a valuable tool for strengthening understanding, practicing skills, and supporting academic success.

At the University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE), we believe that effective learning requires active engagement, critical thinking, reflection, and collaboration. While AI can support these processes, it should not replace the effort and independent thinking that make learning meaningful.

Our goal is to help students use AI intentionally, ethically, and responsibly while developing the knowledge and confidence to become independent learners.

Principles for responsible AI use

Keep Learning at the Center

AI should support your understanding of course material and strengthen critical thinking – helping you develop skills that you can apply independently. Use AI to practice and identify areas for improvement, not to complete assignments as quickly as possible.

Ask yourself: Am I learning how to do this, or am I just getting an answer? Will I be able to replicate this task or use this skill when I am not using AI?

Keep Learning Human-Centered

Learning involves more than receiving information. Discussions with instructors, collaboration with classmates, tutoring, peer coaching, and other interactive learning experiences help you develop new perspectives and deepen your understanding.

AI can supplement these experiences, but it cannot replace the value or human connection or the guidance of learning support professionals.

Ask yourself: Could I explain this information to another person who hadn’t learned it yet?

Practice Academic Integrity and Transparency

AI use should align with your instructor’s expectations, assignment requirements, and UNC Charlotte’s applicable academic integrity policies.

Before using AI for your coursework, determine whether it is permitted and what forms of assistance are acceptable. When disclosure or acknowledgement is required, follow the applicable instructions. You remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the work you submit.

Ask yourself: Do I fully understand my professor’s expectations around this assignment?

Think Critically and Take Responsibility

AI-generated information is not always accurate, complete, unbiased, or appropriately supported by evidence. Review AI-generated responses carefully and verify important claims against credible sources.

Protect your personal information and confidential academic materials when using AI platforms. You are responsible for evaluating the information AI provides and deciding how to use it appropriately.

Ask yourself: Would I share this information with my roommate or another acquaintance, knowing it is possible this information may not be kept confidential? Have I independently verified this output from a non-AI source?

Using ai to support your learning

Build a Study Plan: Organize upcoming exams, assignments, and study sessions into a manageable schedule. Then review the schedule and make adjustments based on what you know about yourself.

Practice Retrieval: Generate practice questions, flashcards, or self-quizzes based on your notes and course materials. Then double-check that the information produced is accurate.

Understand Difficult Concepts: Request step-by-step explanations, analogies, or examples of challenging topics. Then go over the concept again independent of AI support.

Identify Knowledge Gaps: Explain concept in your own words and ask AI to identify areas you may need to review. Then create a new explanation to fill in the gaps you identified.

Prepare for Exams: Request practice problems at different levels of difficulty, then solve them independently before checking your answers. Then see if you can both generate and solve a practice problem on your own.

Explore Ideas: Brainstorm possible research questions or approaches to a topic while developing your own argument and consulting credible sources. Then take the results and your own research to expand and refine your list of ideas.

Reflect on your progress: Use AI to organize study reflections, identify recurring challenges, and consider adjustments to your learning strategies. Then write your own reflection on what you’ve experienced so far this semester, including what is working well and what needs to change.

Try this: using ai as a study partner

Instead of asking AI to complete a task for you, give it instructions that encourage active participation.

Instead of “Give me the answers to these biology questions.”

______________________________________________________________________________

Instead of “Write my essay introduction.”

______________________________________________________________________________

Instead of “Summarize everything I need to know for my exam.”

______________________________________________________________________________

Try “Quiz me on these biology concepts one question at a time. Wait for my answer before proving feedback. Guide me through identifying and correcting any mistakes and give me a new question to try again.”
______________________________________________________________________________
Try: Help me evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of my proposed thesis. Ask me questions that will help me clarify my argument without writing the introduction for me.
______________________________________________________________________________
Try: “Help me identify the main concepts in these notes. Then, create a practice quiz that tests my understanding without showing me the answers immediately.”

6 Potential pitfalls

  1. Ethical Considerations: AI software may raise ethical concerns, such as the use of AI-generated content without proper attribution or copyright permissions. Students must ensure they understand and adhere to ethical guidelines, instructor policies, and academic integrity policies. Using AI tools without authorization from the course’s instructor may be considered a violation of the Code of Student Academic Integrity.
  2. Privacy and Data Security: Be mindful of the data you provide to AI software. Understand the privacy policies of the platform and ensure that your personal and academic information is handled securely. Be cautious about sharing sensitive data that could potentially be misused.
  3. Reliance on AI as a Substitute for Learning: AI software can provide assistance and resources, but it should not replace active learning and critical thinking. Relying solely on AI-generated content without engaging in deep learning and understanding can hinder long-term retention, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  4. Limited Contextual Understanding: AI models often lack contextual understanding and may generate inaccurate or biased results. Students should critically evaluate and verify the information generated by AI software before considering it reliable or factual.
  5. Overreliance on AI-generated Content: It’s important to avoid overreliance on AI-generated content and actively engage in critical thinking, independent research, and collaborative learning with peers and instructors. AI tools should complement learning efforts rather than become the only source of information.
  6. Lack of Customization: AI software does have some capacity for personalization, but it does have some limitations in catering to individual learning preferences and needs. It’s essential to explore different learning methods and resources to find the most effective approach for your specific style.

ai and the human side of learning

AI is one resource among may available to support your academic success. Some learning challenges are best addressed through conversation and personalized guidance.
